This is a Henry Deringer pocket pistol of the small size collectors call the Peanut, in .40 caliber with a barrel of one and a half inches and an overall length of five inches. The top flat is stamped Made For / M.W. Galt & Brother / Washington D.C., a retailer marking seen on few Deringers. The barrel keeps its original brown finish with the striping intact, two silver bands circle the breech, and the mounts are engraved throughout. The wood is excellent with crisp checkering, and the supplier rates the whole piece excellent.
This is a cabinet piece for a North Carolina collector of American pocket pistols, not a handgun anyone would carry or shoot today. The Galt retailer stamp is the detail that sets it apart from other Deringers, and the surviving brown barrel finish and sharp checkering are the condition points to study in the photographs. It is filed as an antique handgun in used condition.
