A cased pair of British dueling pistols by Richard Southall, made around 1840, in .45 caliber with 8.5-inch barrels. The barrels are browned and keep most of that finish; they are unmarked apart from a Birmingham proof underneath. The breech plugs are engraved and carry a gold band, the locks are engraved and signed SOUTHALL, and the trigger guards are engraved with original blue remaining, more on one pistol than the other. The stocks are deluxe wood with cross-hatch checkering. Both come in a partially form-fitted case with their accessories. Southall worked in Birmingham from 1820 to 1845. No serial number.
This set is for the North Carolina collector of antique English pistols rather than for anyone who means to shoot it. The seller calls the guns very sharp and notes the difference in trigger-guard blue between the two. Case, accessories and a matched pair together are what make a set like this; study the photographs for the case fit and the condition of each piece.
