This L.C. Smith Ideal Grade is a 12-gauge side-by-side from the 1920s, serial RE46069, with 32-inch barrels choked Full and Full. It is an ejector gun with double triggers, and the action locks up tight. The barrels have been reblued, the receiver shows a gray and brown patina and rates very good, and the bores are excellent. The stock was refinished and a recoil pad added, giving a 13.5-inch length of pull.

Long 32-inch barrels with tight Full chokes suit shots at distance rather than close flushes. North Carolina allows shotguns in deer gun season in every zone, and a double with ejectors reloads quickly, though the tight chokes mean checking your slug or buckshot pattern first. The refinished stock and reblued barrels make it a gun to carry rather than a safe queen, and hunter orange is required in gun season.
