Kinko Fuchi Kashira

A kinko fuchi and kashira set, the collar and pommel cap fitted to a Japanese sword hilt, sold used under stock number MGJ378. The decoration shows horses rendered in copper, gold and shakudo, laid over a shakudo ground finished in nanako. The signature reads Goto Mitsu Nori, who worked under the art name Goto Tenjo and whose dates are given as 1835 to 1879.

A signed set from a named artist is bought for the metalwork itself. Fuchi and kashira of this kind are displayed in a fitted box, studied for the quality of the nanako punching and the inlay, or used to complete a hilt that is being restored to period fittings. The horse theme carries across both pieces, so they read as a matched pair. North Carolina collectors of Japanese sword fittings should check the signature and inlay detail in the photos against the description, as no condition grade beyond used is given.
