Scarce Model 1816 U.S. Flintlock Musket

This Model 1816 U.S. flintlock musket was made by D. Nippes of Philadelphia and carries the date 1837 on both the lock and the barrel tang. The barrel is 42 inches, round, .69 caliber and smoothbore, with a very good bore. Markings include US over JH with a sunken circle P proof on the barrel, US / D. Nippes / Phila on the lock, and JH in the stock. Nippes built only about 1,600 of these from 1837 to 1840, hence the word scarce.

Condition is listed as excellent. Most of the brown finish survives on the metal and most of the dark case colors on the lock; the stock has sharp edges, an inch-long chip at the barrel tang and a few storage dents. Screws are crisp, the touch hole shows no erosion, swivels and cleaning rod are present, and the action works. It appears to have been fired very little, if ever. For a North Carolina buyer this is a collector's arm, not a field gun.
